About Tändstickspalatset
Two Ivars that have left an imprint
Tändstickspalatset was designed for the matchstick king and entrepreneur Ivar Kreuger during the late 1920's as Head Office for Senska Tändsticksaktiebolaget (Swedish Match). By aggressive investments and innovative financial instruments he built a global match and financial empire. Between the two world wars, he negotiated match monopolies with European and Central and South American governments, and finally controlled two thirds of the worldwide match production, and became known as the "Match King".
Architect: Ivar Tengbom
The contract to create the Tändstickspalatset was awarded by the Ivar Tengbom, he too a man who had achieved great success in his work with several talked-about buildings, among them the Stockholm Concert Hall.
Tengbom cooperated with the best craftsmen and decorators at the time. Material such as mahogany, jacaranda, ivory and marble spoke their own clear language: This was going to become a palais like office building inspired by continental architecture.
The office of Ivar Kreuger and the board meeting room are still maintained in their origin state.
